I am a musician (organ) and a tatter (shuttle mostly) living in California. I have dreamed of combining both of these passions.
With help from New Tatting by Tomoko Morimoto. I’m always intrigued when square rounds follow a circular round. I thought this might work for a shawl. I can’t decide if I like it better than this motif from EnjoyTakashima Tatting by Taeko Takashima.
Both squares look good! You'll have to trial-tat a 4 motif sample for each to see how the negative space turns out. It'll help in decision-making.

Works very well. Round to square is often done in crochet, I guess we can follow the same principles.
